What do I do? What does any front-end developer do? Read on squire, thou shalt learn...
Front-end Development
It is the job of a front-end developer to make a functional site usable. What does that mean? Well, basically, it's folk like me who add the 'visual aspects' to a website, who make it look how it does. I design how it's meant to be used most efficiently and productively, I make it usable. I also make websites accessible - ensuring that the maximum amount of visitors can obtain the information you are trying to convey. There's no point having an online sales pitch that people can't experience.
Although I am most definitley a front-end developer, I have 'back-end appreciation' (nice phrase eh? Get it? Oh, never mind...). This means that I integrate well with programmers and back-end developers to apply usable interfaces with powerful applications. Functionality meets usability.
Design
Front-end development and design pretty much go hand in hand. According to the Aesthetic Usability Effect:
"If something is perceived as beautiful... it is more usable as well."Mark Boulton - Web Standards Creativity
I design rich UI (User Interface)s which compel users to make pro-active choices, and give websites a secondary asset - aesthetic beauty. What could be better than communicating a message via a great looking medium?
So far, you've heard a lot about the web, but I'm also pretty handy with identity and print design too, look.
Consulting
The ideal solution if you already have a site that you would like to iron any accessibility creases out of or if you are an agency with limited expertise in this area. I can review your website and present an audit to you highlighting any let downs, and outlining their remedies.
Copywriting
Believe it or not, one key aspect of a usable website is decent copy. Not only does it create a more professional appearance, logical lexis makes for a better user experience, it offers more flow, and doesn't require the user to re-read and decypher sentences - a sure way of putting them off even trying to use your website. I offer copywriting through a friend, colleague and associate - Joe Whitley.
